CHIROPRACTIC AND BREASTFEEDING

We are seeing lots of pregnant mamas at Rushmore Family Chiropractic! We love treating entire families and offering chiropractic and wellness solutions to the very young, the very old and everyone in between.

Both Dr. Ashley Kauffman and Dr. Becky Beilstein have infants who are nursing (they gave birth to Owen and Aria last October – on the same day, in fact!). Many of our nursing patients have expressed worries about breastfeeding their newborns. We know what that’s like and are happy to offer solutions.

If your baby is having trouble latching on, or becomes irritable during or after nursing, it’s really difficult for mom. She may stress or lose sleep, wondering what she can do to help both baby and herself enjoy the nursing experience more. Moms who suffer from blocked milk ducts or cracked nipples can experience pain and even depression.

Chiropractic adjustments for your infant may help them grow more comfortable and relaxed with the breastfeeding process. Chiropractic care is safe and effective for infants, and uses a very different and much gentler technique than with adults, teens and even young children. There is no ‘cracking’ or ‘popping’ when it comes to infant chiropractic care and we feel confident that it can help babies.

A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine, which interferes with the nerve flow up and down the spine and to each of the organs attached to the spine. Your baby, for instance, may have a difficult time latching on and suckling because of a subluxation affecting the spine, the skull or even their TMJ (temporomandibular joint). A gentle adjustment can relieve these subluxations, making the baby more comfortable and taking to the breast naturally again.

Subluxations are not just caused by physical injury, which is why a tiny baby can still experience them. Even chemical and emotional stresses can result in subluxations for your infant.

Chiropractic care can also help those stressful moms who are holding their babies for long periods of time, waiting for them to take to the breast, losing sleep and feeling uncomfortable.  So, if you know a new mom or baby who needs a little extra help settling into the practice of nursing and breastfeeding, give Rushmore Family Chiropractic a call! And if you are pregnant for the first time and under the care of a chiropractor, talk to us about your concerns and worries. We might just be able to provide some answers before that fussy baby arrives.
